Job Title: Victims Assistance Internship / Undergraduate

Services: Crisis intervention and emotional support via a 24-hour Hotline for crime victims; short-term counseling sessions; support groups for victims and co-victims; training and supervising volunteers. Special programs provide assistance to children, youth and families; and for victims who are elderly or who have a disability.

Clientele: Anyone who becomes a victim of crime in the City and County of Denver or is a resident of Denver at the time the crime occurs.

Mission: The Denver Center for Crime Victims’ purpose is to assist crime victims and provide crime prevention education. A victim is any individual who has been directly or indirectly injured by another’s criminal act that resulted in physical, psychological, social or economic harm. Included are persons victimized as a result of age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, disability or national origin.

Opportunities: Learn to provide case management, crisis intervention and emotional support via a 24-hour Hotline for crime victims; assist Program Specialists in providing assistance for victims who are elderly or who have a disability, for children who are victims of crime and their families, and for victims requiring specialized long-term assistance. Visit and observe other victim assistance programs; police ride-along with the Denver Police Department; network with other service providers; and community outreach.

Supervision: Kathi Fanning, L.P.C., Director of Training and Volunteer Services
Clinical: Kent Webb, LCSW, Clinical Supervisor
(Clinical supervision currently is done in group setting on Wednesday afternoons, 2:30-4:00 p.m.)
Orientation: Non-judgmental, client-centered.

Work Schedule: Minimum of 8 hours per week (weekdays 9:00-5:00); some evenings possible (5-8 p.m.).

Qualifications: Interest in and desire to acquire skills in crisis intervention theories and practice; some knowledge of victimology/PTSD and client-centered therapy helpful; excellent active listening skills needed as well as an empathetic non-judgmental perspective on crime victimization; ability to work well with a wide range of populations; good problem-solving skills an asset as well as a sense of humor!

Salary: Unpaid.

Number of Intern Positions: 5.
