Support Groups
HOMICIDE/SUICIDE Support Groups
Support groups bring together people who have experienced or been affected by traumatic events. These groups are offered for both adult and child survivors of homicide and suicide. Victims are offered the opportunity to share their stories, experience empathetic understanding, and receive education from each other about trauma and the trauma recovery process. These groups also assist victims in establishing a support network that may continue once the group has terminated. Support groups range from six to eight weeks.
BROTHERS™
BROTHERS (Brothers Reaching Out Toward Healing, Exploration and Respect of Self) is an eight-week support group for boys and young men ages 6 – 17 who have been victims of or witnesses to crime. The curriculum focuses on their emotional recovery and includes five goals: awareness of one’s thoughts; accountability of feelings; behaviors and their consequences; problem-solving competence; and the completion of an activity that incorporates their acquired knowledge from the group experience.
The Girls’ Group™
The Girls’ Group, an eight-week support group for girls and young women, ages 6-17, who have witnessed or experienced violence. The curriculum focuses on recovering from the effects of trauma, learning healthy ways of expressing feelings, self-confidence building, learning the importance of family and community in healing, and discovering your own uniqueness.
KINSHIP CARE PROGRAMS
DCCV sponsors an ongoing support program and seminars for kinship care providers. This program seeks to address the challenges kinship care providers face as primary caregivers, while offering information and a commitment to wellness for the individuals who participate.
Our one-day workshops address issues such as: how to keep children safe from gangs, how to recognize drugs and drug use, parenting skills for the new millennium, healthy nutrition, childhood immunizations, enrolling in public schools, governmental benefits, custody and other legal issues.
Workshops are held throughout the year and are FREE to anyone in a kinship care relationship. Childcare and interpreters are available for our workshops upon request. Email Us to request to be added to our mailing list.
